From Middle Persian 𐭥𐭮𐭢𐭣𐭤 ‎(namāč, namāz, reverence, prostration, prayer) / 𐬥𐬀𐬨𐬁𐬰 ‎(namāz), from the Proto-Indo-Iranian root *namas- ‎(to bow, prostrate). Compare Sanskrit नमस् ‎(namas).
