[edit]From Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (ptmʾn' /paymān/, “measure, period; moderation; treaty”), ultimately from *pati- and *maH- (“to measure”). Related to the verb پیمودن (peymudan, “to measure”). Compare the Iranian borrowings: Old Armenian պայման (payman), Old Georgian პაემანი (ṗaemani), Arabic فَيْمَان (faymān).
