From Proto-Indo-European *kʷey- (pile, stow, to gather). Cognates include Northern Kurdish çandin (to plant, cultivate), çinîn (to reap), nijinandin/nijandin (to pile), Sanskrit चिनोति (cinóti, he gathers, collects), Old Church Slavonic чинити (činiti, commit, perform) and Ancient Greek ποιέω (poiéō, make, create).
