Persian

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Composed of کاو (kāv, present stem of کاویدن (kāvīdan, to burrow, to dig, to search deeply, to investigate)) +‎ اک ('-āk', suffix that forms active participle from present verb stem).[1] The suffix is an alternative form of ا ('-ā'), which originates from Middle Persian -'k' / [Term?] (/-āg/).[2] Refer to ـی () and ـه (-e) for more information regarding the phonological and orthographic shifts, and the exceptions thereof, that impacted suffixes in the transition period from Middle Persian to New Persian.

Alternatively, it may be from Turkic.[3]
