[edit]From Biblical Hebrew מִרְיָם (miryām), possibly from Aramaic מַרְיָם (maryām), of uncertain origin but possibly related to a root related to bitterness; compare Classical Syriac ܡܪܝܪܐ (marrīrā, “bitter”).
