Inherited from Proto-Indo-European *kʷetwr̥-th₂ó-s (“fourth”), from *kʷetwóres. Cognate with Ancient Greek τέτᾰρτος (tétărtos), Proto-Germanic *fedurþô (whence English fourth), Latin quārtus, Old East Slavic четвьртъ (četvĭrtŭ).
