[edit]Borrowed from Sanskrit तन्त्र (tantra), from Proto-Indo-European *ten-tlo-/*tn̥-tlo-, ultimately from *ten-. Related to तानना (tānnā, “to stretch”), ताँत (tā̃t, “sinew”), ताँती (tā̃tī, “weaver”), and तंतु (tantu, “fiber”). Doublet of तार (tār, “string, wire”). Cognate with English tantra (a Sanskrit borrowing).
