From Proto-Indo-Aryan *támas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *támas, from Proto-Indo-European *témH-os, from *temH- (dark). Cognate with Avestan 𐬙𐬆𐬨𐬀𐬵 (təmah), Persian تم (tam, cataract), Latin tenebra (darkness).
