Etymology 1[edit]

Probably of substrate origin; compare Tamil மண்டி (maṇṭi, dregs). Indo-European etymologies have been proposed, but are difficult to verify; compare Sanskrit मृज् (mṛj, to wipe, purify) and Lithuanian blandùs (foggy; thick).
