From Sanskrit जानाति (jānāti), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *ȷ́ānáHti, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́ānáHti, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵn̥néh₃ti (to know). Cognate with Sylheti ꠎꠣꠘꠣ (zana).
