Inherited from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀧𑀸𑀟𑁂𑀇 (pāḍei), from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀧𑀸𑀤𑁂𑀢𑀺 (*pādeti), from Sanskrit पातयति (pātayati, to throw, cause to fly or fall), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *pāt(H)áyati, from Proto-Indo-European pot(h₂)-éye-ti (to fly), from the root *pet(h₂)- (to fly).[1] Doublet of পড়া (poṛa, to fall), পাত (pat, fall, destruction, ruin), পতন (poton, fall, decline, degeneration), পতিত (potito, fallen, declined, abject), পাতা (pata, leaf, page), পত্র (potro, page, paper), and পাত্তা (patta, address; news; attention).

Inherited from Prakrit *𑀧𑀟𑁆𑀟 (*paḍḍa), from Sanskrit पद्र (padra, village), probably borrowed from a non-Aryan substrate, possibly Dravidian. Cognate with Odia ପଡ଼ା (pôṛa), Hindi पाड़ा (pāṛā).[2]
