Inherited from Old Gujarati पीइ (pīi), from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀧𑀺𑀩𑀇 (pibaï), 𑀧𑀺𑀯𑀇 (pivaï), from Sanskrit पिबति (píbati), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *píbati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *píbati, from Proto-Indo-European *píbeti, late variant of *píph₃eti, reduplication of *peh₃- (to drink).

Cognates include Assamese পিয়া (pia), Dhivehi ބޮނީ (bonī), Hindustani پینا / पीना (pīnā), Kachchi પીણૂ (pīṇū), Marathi पिणे (piṇe), Nepali पिउनु (piunu), Odia ପିଇବା (piibā), Punjabi پینا / ਪੀਣਾ (pīṇā), Romani pijel, Sindhi پِئَڻُ (piaṇu), and Sinhalese බොනවා (bonawā).
