From Sanskrit धातु (dhātu, layer, stratum; constituent part, ingredient; element, primitive matter; constituent element or essential ingredient of the body; primary element of the earth; verbal root) +‎ -వు (-vu).

ధాతువు (dhātuvum (plural ధాతువులు)

  1. An element, primary substance.
  2. A constituent of the earth or mountains, a mineral, metal, ore, fossil.
  3. An essential element or constituent of the body, viz. chyle, blood, flesh, fat, bone, marrow, and semen.
  4. A humor or affection of the body viz. wind, bile, and phlegm;
  5. The pulse.
  6. (grammar) The primary element of words, a verbal root.
