Compound of เจ้า (jâao, lord) +‎ ฟ้า (fáa, heaven), literally lord of heaven. Compare Burmese စော်ဘွား (caubhwa:), Khmer ចៅហ្វា (cawhviə), Lao ເຈົ້າຟ້າ (chao fā), Shan ၸဝ်ႈၽႃႉ (tsāo phâ̰a).
