Particularly: “Not given etymology by STEDT (tak "oar, paddle"), and not mentioned by Luce 1981. Doesn't really resemble any other words for "oar, paddle" in the area. Maybe a nominalization of Etymology 2, thus "the ascender (of rivers)" > "oar, paddle"?”

Etymology 2

[edit]

Inherited from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *l-t(j)ak (upper surface, top, above, palate; to climb, lift, ascend), which is likely related to *s-tak (head) (whence Lepcha [script needed] (a-t'yak, head)) and *s-tjaŋ (upper part, top, summit; to rise, raise) (whence Old Chinese (OC *djaŋʔ, *djaŋs, “to ascend; above”)). More direct cognates from *l-t(j)ak include Old Chinese (OC *tɯɡ, “to ascend, promote”), (OC *tʰaːɡ, *tjaɡ, “to open up, develop”) (STEDT).
