From Proto-Lolo-Burmese *k-rip (“shadow, shade”), from Proto-Tibeto-Burman *g/s-rip (“idem”) (STEDT: rip "throw a shadow"). Cognate with Tibetan གྲིབ (grib, “shade, shadow”).
