Description[edit]

The power button or standby symbol: a half-circle with a vertical line protruding outwards cutting through the top-centre of the circle, and ending in the circle's centre.

Origin[edit]

Created 1973 by the International Electrotechnical Commission as a translingual symbol for electronic products intended to be shipped around the world; likely an alteration of (turns a device on or off by fully disconnecting the power supply), itself a combination of (power-off) and (power-on).

Symbol[edit]

  1. (computing) Turns a device on or off without disconnecting the power supply; sleep mode.
  2. (Internet, graphical user interface) Login; logout.
  3. (Internet, graphical user interface, uncommon) Closes or exits an application or webpage.
