From Old Japanese *kopori; possibly borrowed from Koreanic: specifically, Baekje 己富里 (*kopori, “district”)); if true, then cognate with pre-MK */kòpòlh/, whence *고ᄫᆞᆶ (Yale: *kòWòlh) (which is preserved in a MK place name), whence further Korean 고을 (goeul))
