Etymology[edit]

From () (ma-, eye, archaic bound form) + (na, archaic possessive particle) + (しり) (shiri, end; rear), in reference to the outward corner as further back from the front of the face. The shiri changes to jiri as an instance of rendaku (連濁). Compare synonym ()(じり) (mejiri).[1][2][3][4][5][6]
