Etymology[edit]

五十音 (literally fifty sounds) +‎ 仮名 (kana), so called because historically, mainly katakana were arranged in 五十音順 (literally order of the fifty sounds), as opposed to hiragana which were historically arranged in 伊呂波順 (Iroha order).
