Etymology[edit]

Blend of 南無阿弥陀仏 (Namu Amidabutsu, Namo Amitābhāya) +‎ 豆腐 (tōfu), from the fact that Buddhist monks eat a lot of tofu and the way the phrase Namu Amidabutsu can be misheard.
