Usage notes

• Abortion is illegal in Japan. Although there are some exceptions under special conditions, in laws these exceptions are referred to as 中(ちゅう)絶(ぜつ) (chūzetsu) instead. This has influenced the Japanese language and 中絶 is generally preferred over 堕胎 today. (further readings in Japanese)
