Etymology
Attested in Kunyu Wanguo Quantu by Matteo Ricci in 1602, literally “great west sea”, from 大 (“great”, meaning great distance) and 西洋 (“west sea”, meaning any seas in the west of Indochina), as opposed to 小西洋 (“lesser west sea”, i.e. Indian Ocean), 小東洋 (“lesser east sea”, i.e. West Pacific around Japan) and 大東洋 (“great east sea”, i.e. East Pacific around Mexico) (Zhang, 2012).
