Etymology[edit]

Vovin (2017) proposes that the name of the mountain is from (fire) +‎ (master).[1]

The current kanji spelling possibly relates to a folk etymology of (fu, abundant) + (shi, soldiers) climbing the mountain. Multiple other folk etymologies exist, such as: (fu) + (shi, death) ("immortal"). All the folk etymologies rely on on'yomi readings, a trait that Vovin finds unsatisfactory.
