  1. small okurigana used with kanbun, sutegana
    Synonym: 送り仮名
  2. small kana, see complete list below
    1. used for diphthongs, including 促音(そくおん) (sokuon) and 拗音(ようおん) (yōon)
      Example: そっと and しゃ
    2. placed under kanji to be read as intended by oneself, often seen in senryu and haiku, among others
      Example: 黒ㇿ is read as くろ instead of こく
