From Old Japanese 揺蕩ひ (tayutapi). Appears in the Man'yōshū of 759 CE.

Derived as the 連(れん)用(よう)形(けい) (ren'yōkei, “stem or continuative form”) of the verb 揺蕩(たゆた)う (tayutau, “to bob, to pause, to hesitate”).

The kanji spelling is an example of jukujikun (熟字訓), based on the synonymous Middle Chinese-derived term 揺蕩 (yōtō).
