From 篠の目 (shino no me), 篠 (shino), abbreviation of 篠竹 (shinodake, “a kind of bamboo”), and 目 (me, “eye”). The kanji compound literally means "east clouds", similar to the direction of sunrise. The kanji are jukujikun (熟字訓).
