Etymology[edit]

Analyzable as a compound of (yoku, desire; greed, avarice) +‎ 張る (haru, o become or to make something tense or taut; figuratively, to hold something intently).[1][2][3][4] The haru changes to baru as an instance of rendaku (連濁).

Appears in texts from roughly 1763.[1]

Ultimately, likely a shift from older synonym 欲ぼる (yokuboru),[1][4] dating to 1275.[1]

Compare 威張る (ibaru).
