From the attributive form of the Early Middle Japanese adjective hagayushi: /hagayuki/ > /hagayui/, with the medial /-k-/ falling out. Compound of (ha, tooth) +‎ 痒い (kayui, itchy), voiced to -gayui due to compounding.
