Etymology[edit]
From Chinese 臭豆腐 (chòudòufu). Analyzable as a compound of 臭 (shū, “stink, stench”) + 豆腐 (tōfu, “tofu”). The tōfu changes to dōfu as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
