Etymology[edit]

First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean ᄀᆞᄅᆞ치〮다〮 (Yale: kòlòchítá), meaning "to point; to teach", presumably because a teacher points to what they teach. The verb split semantically after Middle Korean, so that 가르치다 no longer means "to point". Doublet of 가리키다 (garikida, to point), perhaps also related to 가락 (garak, “a thin, long object; finger”).
