Etymology

By rebracketing of diminutives such as libellus (liber +‎ -lus) or femella (femina +‎ -lus), where the stem consonants -n- and -r- shifted to -l- by regressive assimilation; or diminutives of diminutives such as porcellus (porculus +‎ -lus), ocellus (oculus +‎ -lus).
