Etymology

1894, US. Lua error in Module:affix/templates at line 38: The |lang= parameter is not used by this template. Place the language code in parameter 1 instead. (alternatively analyzed as Lua error in Module:affix/templates at line 38: The |lang= parameter is not used by this template. Place the language code in parameter 1 instead.), from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Ancient Greek λύω (lúō, to loosen, to dissolve) + φίλος (phílos, beloved) + -ίζειν (-ízein) + (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Latin -ātiō, due to the dried product being able to rapidly reabsorb the solvent and restore the original substance, hence “lyophil” (solvent-loving). Popularized from 1960 by Louis R. Rey.[1][2] Cognates in other European languages via same construction.
