From Mediaeval Byzantine Greek ἐμπορῶ (emporô), ἠμπορῶ (ēmporô). Through a folk etymology connection to ἔμπορος m (émporos, merchant), ultimately from Ancient Greek εὐπορέω (euporéō, to thrive, prosper, find means).
