Etymology

From iso- +‎ gloss, ultimately from Ancient Greek ἴσος (ísos, equal) (possibly from Proto-Indo-European *wi- (to separate)) + γλῶσσα (glôssa, tongue; language) (ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *glōgʰs).
