Usage notes
मत (mat) is the imperative negation and it is only used with verb which are in the imperative mood.
Compare the subjunctive negations न (na) and ना (nā) which are only used with verbs in subjunctive mood and the indicative negation नहीं (nahī̃) which is used with verbs in indicative mood.
