From Ottoman Turkish یاقمق (yakmak, to burn), from Proto-Turkic *jak- (to burn).[1]

Cognate with Karakhanid [script needed] (yak-, to burn), Chuvash ҫутма (śutma, to set on fire, light), Kazakh жағу (jağu, to burn), Kyrgyz жагуу (jaguu, to burn), Turkmen ýakmak (to burn), Uyghur ياقماق (yaqmaq, to kindle, light), Uzbek yoqmoq (to burn), Yakut сах (saq, to strike fire).
