Etymology

From Ancient Greek -ωσις (-ōsis, state, abnormal condition, or action), from -όω (-óō) stem verbs + -σις (-sis).[1]

Suffix

-osis (plural -oses)

  1. (pathology) functional disease or condition such as hepatosis
  2. process, action
  3. formation, increase

Usage notes

Corresponding adjectives are formed using -otic.
