From Proto-Indo-European *médʰu (“honey; mead”). Cognate with Sanskrit मधु (madhu), Avestan 𐬨𐬀𐬜𐬎 (maδu), Old Church Slavonic медъ (medŭ), Lithuanian medus, Ancient Greek μέθυ (méthu).
