From perfective po- +‎ lizać, from Proto-Slavic *lizati. Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *leyǵʰ- (to lick).

Etymology traces back roughly four millennia and includes Luwian language. Not to be confused with later German Polizei borrowed from Latin politia tracing back roughly three millennia to Hellenic πόλις (polis).
