From Middle High German armbrust, from Medieval Latin arbalista, from Late Latin arcuballista, from Latin arcus(bow) + ballista(ancient military engine for hurling missiles) (compare English arbalest); modified by folk etymology to appear to be Arm(arm) +‎ Brust(breast).
