From Middle High German armbrust, from Medieval Latin arbalista, from Late Latin arcuballista, from Latin arcus (bow) + ballista (ancient military engine for hurling missiles) (compare English arbalest); modified by folk etymology to appear to be Arm (arm) +‎ Brust (breast).
