  • (file)

Außenseiter m (strong, genitive Außenseiters, plural Außenseiter, feminine Außenseiterin)

  1. outsider (who is not part of a particular group)
  2. loner, outsider (who is socially awkward)
  3. outcast, leper, castaway, pariah (one that has been excluded from a society or system, a pariah)
Synonyms: Ausgestoßener, Geächteter, Aussätziger, Outcast, Paria
  4. (sports) outsider, underdog, contender (who has little chance of winning)

Usage notes[edit]

  • In sports contexts, English “outsider” is sometimes used to mean a contestant who is not among the general favourites but is given a good chance of winning by some of the experts. German Außenseiter is not used in this sense; the correct word would be Geheimfavorit.
