Etymology[edit]

From Middle High German tole, tāle, tāhele (diminutive of tāhe), from Old High German tāhala, diminutive of tāha, from Proto-Germanic *dēhǭ. The modern form is not inherited from written Middle High German but is a Central German dialect form (with unshifted d- and dialectal -ā--ō-).
