[edit]Modern meanings since the 16th century. From Middle High German *hantgrif (only attested as hantgrift f (“the laying on of hands”)), from (Old High German hantgrif m (“handful, handgrip”), from Proto-West Germanic *handugripi (“handgrip”). Equivalent to Hand + Griff.
