Modern meanings since the 16th century. From Middle High German *hantgrif (only attested as hantgrift f (the laying on of hands)), from (Old High German hantgrif m (handful, handgrip), from Proto-West Germanic *handugripi (handgrip). Equivalent to Hand +‎ Griff.
