From Middle High German herberge, from Old High German heriberga, from Proto-Germanic *harjabergō. Analysable as Heer (army) + a derivative of bergen (to shelter), thus “accommodation for an army”. Cognate with Dutch herberg, English harbor and harbinger, French auberge, Italian albergo.
