Etymology[edit]

From Middle High German lōrber, from Old High German lōrberi, from lōr (laurel) + beri (berry), the former from Latin laurus. The compound originally referred to the laurel's fruit or berry, which is now distinguished as Lorbeere (but fairly rare).
