Proto-Slavic

Etymology

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *deśimt, from Proto-Indo-European *déḱm̥t. The (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European form is itself complex, including an element *ḱm̥t, possibly from *ḱomt (hand) (> German Hand, (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Dutch, English hand), in which case *de-ḱm̥t would mean originally “two hands”.

Cognates include Lithuanian dešimt, Latvian desmit, Old Prussian dessimpts, Gothic 𐍄𐌰𐌹𐌷𐌿𐌽 (taihun), Old Norse tiund, Old High German zëhan, German zehn, English ten, Sanskrit दश (dáśa), Ancient Greek δέκα (déka), Latin decem.
