Salzstängel m (strong, genitive Salzstängels, plural Salzstängel)

  1. (Switzerland, Austria, Vorarlberg only) oblong bread roll made from the same dough as Semmeln which is rolled up diagonally (thus tapered at both ends) and sprinkled with coarse salt and caraway
    Synonyms: Salzstangerl, Salzstangel

Usage notes[edit]

Used predominantly in Vorarlberg (rest of Austria: Salzstangerl or Salzstangel) and Switzerland.
