Etymology

    Sino-Vietnamese word from 泰蘭, composed of (Thai) and (-land), coined with the phonetic morpheme  / (lán) by analogy with the European names of Thailand. In proper Mandarin, the country is known as 泰國 / 泰国 (Tàiguó), with the semantic morpheme  / (guó, country; state; -land) instead.
