Sino-Vietnamese word from 泰蘭, composed of 泰 (“Thai”) and 蘭 (“-land”), coined with the phonetic morpheme 蘭／兰 (lán) by analogy with the European names of Thailand. In proper Mandarin, the country is known as 泰國／泰国 (Tàiguó), with the semantic morpheme 國／国 (guó, “country; state; -land”) instead.
