土佐

Hello Jason, thanks for adding the Cantonese pronunciation. Should 佐 be zo3 instead? 粵語審音配詞字庫 only has the pronunciation of zo3. Wyang (talk) 11:42, 25 December 2017 (UTC)

Hello. Ummmm... I did not check about the dictionary. This zo6 is just reflecting what I have heard in the daily life, for instance, anchors of TV news. Another example of 佐 which pronounced as zo6 is 警察隊員佐級協會. This may be a tone sandhi. How should this be presented? --J.Wong 12:00, 25 December 2017 (UTC)

I think tones 3 and 6 may be hard to distinguish in this case, so it may in fact be a tone 3, perceived to be lower than the word itself in isolation due to the preceding tone 2. @Justinrleung, Suzukaze-c, Kc_kennylau Could you weigh in here? Wyang (talk) 12:12, 25 December 2017 (UTC)

I think it's common to mix up 3 and 6 in such "less common" characters. I find myself using the 6th tone for 詛 as well. It might have something to do with 詛 and 佐 (zo3) being less common than 坐, 座 or 助 (zo6). (A similar phenomenon can be seen with 乙 jyut3, which is often pronounced like 月, 粵 or 越 jyut6). To make things even more complicated, 佐 is actually pronounced as zo2, especially in foreign names like 佐敦 (Jordan) and 佐治 (George). Anyway, here are two videos with zo6: [1] [2]. Agree with Justinrleung. I find myself that I will remain to pronounce zo3 if 佐 is at the front of the word especially for those location name and human name of Japan such as 佐佐木公園 and 佐藤. zo2 is especially for foreign names such as 佐敦 and 佐治. It is more likely to become zo2 or zo6 if there is another word in front of 佐, such as 員佐級協會. [3]--J.Wong 03:09, 26 December 2017 (UTC)
